As a constituent, I urge you to cut harmful Food and Drug Administration (FDA) red tape by eliminating unnecessary dog testing mandates that slow medical innovation, hurt businesses, and abuse animals. New polls show that two-thirds of taxpayers like me support this effort.

I was troubled to learn from White Coat Waste Project that the FDA is forcing drug companies to waste millions of dollars on misleading and slow tests in which puppies are force-fed experimental drugs for up to a year, and then killed and dissected.

The FDA admits these outdated tests fail to predict human outcomes over 90 percent of the time, and FDA guidelines allow companies to avoid dog testing in favor of more productive alternatives. But companies that have pushed back on the FDA’s unnecessary and burdensome animal testing mandates have been rejected and punished.

This leads to long delays in safe and effective drugs becoming available to people who need them, and increases the cost of medical care. The need for regulatory relief is especially urgent while the COVID-19 global pandemic is ravaging our health and economy. Human trials of promising COVID-19 treatments are already being slowed by the FDA’s unnecessary dog testing mandate.

Please ensure the FDA abolishes its wasteful dog testing requirements.
