U.S. government agencies experiment on over 30,000 dogs, cats, monkeys and other regulated animals each year with our tax dollars.
Many of these animals are healthy at the end of experiments, but virtually all of them are killed because most agencies do not have policies allowing their retirement to rescues or sanctuaries.
This means that taxpayers are footing the bill for the killing of perfectly adoptable animals.
Violet's Law
— also known as, the Animal Freedom from Testing, Experiments and Research (AFTER) Act (HR 5244/S 1378) — would require federal agencies to enact policies allowing for the retirement of animals no longer needed in taxpayer-funded experimentation.
Act now to urge Congress to pass Violet’s Law!

As a {user_data~State} taxpayer and your constituent, I am urging you to cosponsor Violet's Law, the bipartisan Animal Freedom from Testing, Experiments and Research (AFTER) Act (HR 5244/S 1378), to stop the wasteful killing of healthy dogs, cats, and other animals no longer needed for experiments in federal laboratories. I was troubled to learn from White Coat Waste Project that over 40,000 dogs, cats, and other regulated animals were experimented on in federal laboratories last year but that virtually all of them are killed because agencies do not have policies allowing animals to be retired to rescues or sanctuaries when testing ends. As a result, even healthy animals used in non-invasive experiments are killed and discarded. Retiring lab animals saves tax dollars and is widely supported by taxpayers, Congress, and industry. Fifteen states (MN, CA, NV, NY, CT, DE, IL, MD, RI, NJ, OR, WA, VI, IA, and MA) have also passed post research adoption laws Violet's Law (the AFTER Act) would require federal agencies to enact policies to facilitate the relocation of retired dogs, cats, primates, and other regulated animals no longer needed in government experimentation to private homes, animal rescues, or reputable sanctuaries. In addition, it holds the government accountable for how it treats animals purchased with the public's money. Thank you for your leadership!
