VA Secretary Denis McDonough—a White House cabinet member—is trying to ram through a new round of painful experiments on seven cats at the Stokes VA lab.

Last year, the VA ended its last painful tests on cats following advocacy by taxpayers like me, government watchdog White Coat Waste Project (WCW) and Congress.  So I was troubled to learn from WCW that VA Secretary Denis McDonough recently approved funding for a new round of painful tests on seven cats at Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical (project #18-065-CT-22-001).
 
According to bipartisan members of Congress, Sec. McDonough’s decision to resume painful kitten testing is “at odds” with new federal laws that limit the VA’s use of dogs, cats, and primates in experiments and eliminate other outdated animal testing requirements.
 
Rep. Brian Mast, a combat-wounded veteran himself, deems the experiment “unnecessary” and “unacceptable.”
 
It’s also come to my attention that the seven baby kittens – the “Stokes 7” – have yet to be purchased, so there is still an opportunity to stop the experiments before the abuse begins. 
 
As a taxpayer, I don’t want the VA to waste my hard-earned money abusing cats in cruel and unnecessary experiments. I strongly urge Sec. McDonough to comply with bipartisan efforts to cancel the protocol and end painful testing on cats once and for all.
