Over 9,000 primates are imprisoned and abused in federal labs run by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control, Dept. of Defense (DOD), Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS), Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As a constituent and taxpayer, I was troubled to learn from government watchdog White Coat Waste Project that my tax dollars are paying for wasteful and cruel primate testing at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Dept. of Defense (DOD), Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS), Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
 
Hundreds of millions of tax dollars each year are being wasted on unproductive and unnecessary experiments where monkeys are addicted to street drugs and alcohol, drilled into, crippled and exposed to deadly toxins.
 
What's worse, the government admits these tests fail 95% of the time and waste billions of dollars.
 
Congress has directed the FDA to develop plans to reduce wasteful primate testing, and in recent years the agency has cut its primate use by 44%.  Congress has also enacted legislation directing the VA to phase-out primate tests, which it is in the process of doing.  Other agencies like the NIH have not made similar progress.
 
Like over 70% of taxpayers, I oppose this outdated primate experimentation and support Congress’s work to cut this egregious waste and abuse.
 
I hope you will join bipartisan efforts to urge federal agencies to cut wasteful spending on primate experimentation.
