I was troubled to learn from government watchdog White Coat Waste that my tax dollars are paying for wasteful and cruel experiments on dolphins and sea lions at the Naval base in San Diego.

In 2023, the Navy spent $40 million of taxpayer money to conduct pointless experiments on marine mammals, such as subjecting bottlenose dolphins to extreme cold temperatures to study metabolic rate, force feeding dolphins salt water to see how they process it, and coercing sea lions to play video games.

I was also outraged to learn that $20 billion of my tax dollars are wasted annually to torture animals in experiments conducted and funded by the National Institutes of Health, Dept. of Veterans Affairs, Dept. of Defense, and many other agencies. Experiments like these are a misuse of my tax dollars. Many labs violate federal spending and transparency laws.

I hope you will join bipartisan efforts to urge federal agencies to cut wasteful spending on marine mammals and all animal experimentation.
