As a {user_data~State} taxpayer and your constituent, I was troubled to learn from government watchdog White Coat Waste Project that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) used taxpayer dollars to purchase 40 two-week-old baby pigs and infect them with Ebola at the agency’s dangerous Rocky Mountain Laboratory (RML) in Hamilton, Montana.

RML is classified as a biosafety level 4 (BSL 4) facility because it works with deadly pathogens related to biowarfare that pose a high risk of airborne human infections, that are highly fatal and for which there is no treatment.  RML performs these treacherous experiments on primates, bats, birds, and pigs with deadly viruses like Ebola and even the plague. RML also has a history of weaponizing viruses, security breaches, and infected animals escaping.

Following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, White Coat Waste Project obtained photos and records of the horrendous taxpayer-funded tests that occurred at RML:

• Two-week-old baby pigs were ripped from their mothers and forced to inhale Ebola and another fatal virus
• Pigs suffered from fever, weight loss, hemorrhage, respiratory distress, paralysis, and neurological disorders which ultimately could be fatal
• Pain relief was completely withheld from the suffering animals

Thousands of other animals are abused at RML, and the NIH is currently expanding this risky animal lab with $125 million of COVID relief funds.
 
I hope you will join bipartisan efforts to urge federal agencies to cut the NIH’s dangerous max-pain experiments on pigs and all animals at government labs.
