I was alarmed to learn from government watchdog White Coat Waste Project (WCW) that the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) plans to resume taxpayer-funded experiments on kittens. VA Secretary Denis McDonough recently approved funding for a new round of painful tests on seven cats at the VA’s Stokes lab in Cleveland (project #18-065-CT-22-001). 
 
Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL), a combat-wounded veteran himself, deems the experiment “unnecessary” and “unacceptable.” In a letter to McDonough, Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV) said that his decision is “at odds with Congressional intent, federal law, and the VA’s own…efforts to eliminate the use of cats.” 
 
It’s also come to my attention via a WCW investigation, a front-page Washington Times story, and my local media reports that the seven cats (the “Stokes 7”) have yet to be purchased, so there is still an opportunity to stop the abuse before the wasteful spending begins.  
 
As a taxpayer, I don’t want the VA to waste my hard-earned money abusing cats and other pets in painful and unnecessary experiments. I strongly urge you to address this government scandal. Please demand that Sec. McDonough complies with bipartisan efforts to cancel the illegal and wasteful tests on cats and kittens.
